My original plan had been to skip vang vieng entirely as the tubing is the main attraction of this place. But since so many people died in the river (22 people in 2011 alone) the government decided to close down the bars that used to line the river. Now the tubing consists of the people slowly floating down the river in massive tire tubes and just enjoying the scenery. However as I saw it hasn't stopped people from bringing their own booze and stop now and again to refill their glasses. As for me, I really enjoy just floating down the river in peace and quiet and enjoying the spectacular view of the mountains.
Today we took the 4 hour journey which took us to the capital Vientiane. So far we just managed to check into a guest house as high season just hit and many places were full. Tomorrow we will go exploring and try to see the city and what it has to offer us. :)
